Cackling hysterically because apparently the NT’s Edward II was too gay for the Daily Mail
John Heffernan’s king is in love with Piers Gaveston, as the plot demands, but his illicit, impolitic gayness is so overdone, we could at times be in the Cage Aux Folles.
Dammit Marlowe, how dare you put a gay plot in, now they have to pretend not to be entirely homophobic…
Marlowe’s Edward II is a violent take on the Richard II story which was given such poetical treatment by Shakespeare.
I don’t even want to touch the problems with that. Chronology, actual kings, anyone?
In short, the Daily Mail hated it, which means it is definitely awesome.
GAY PEOPLE! GAY PEOPLE KISSING! OH, THE HUMANITY!
There’s no greater sign of an awesome production than Quentin Letts hating it. I’ve heard actors saying they dream of being in a production good enough to get 1* from him…would’ve been disappointed if he’d liked it to be honest xD
