Top 13 Plays of 2013

1. Edward II (National Theatre)

Well SURPRISE! Who expected to see this at number one? Certainly not me… ;)

Let’s be quite honest here. John Heffernan. Lead role. The chances of me not loving every second of this were slim to none. I admit that. But I don’t think he’s brilliant because I love him, I love him because he’s brilliant. He speaks verse so beautifully, and with such meaning. I admit sometimes I struggle to fully understand verse like that but he always seems to be able to make me know exactly what he’s talking about. He has this voice that sounds old and young and sad and amused and scared and wise and knowing all at the same time. He cries on cue, out of nowhere. And I always believe him. Every performance he gives, he convinces me. He can even make me not like him if he wants to (and he did in this, for a short while, before he went and made me care about him and then broke me completely. Bastard.). He’s just…oh, I’m sorry to rave on, I know I always do, but HE’S SO WONDERFUL. Just seeing him do a rehearsed reading, sat on a chair with a sсript in his hand, is a delight and a privilege. Lead role on the Olivier stage? TAKE MY MONEY.

I know this was a Marmite play. I know people left at the interval. I know some of the critics absolutely detested it. Well…who cares. I thought it was bold and brave and exciting. John is perfect. Kyle Soller was an awesome Gaveston, from his ridiculously fabulous swaggering entrance to his demise and return as Lightborn. And they were fantastic together. I believed in their love and their heartbreak and that top photo there? Stage snog of the year. Winner. I loved Isabella, I loved Mortimer, I loved Lancaster, I loved Spencer and Baldock, I loved the creepy as fuck masks, I loved the video screens, I loved the captions, the music, the drums, the mix of period and modern, all the AAAALAAAAAAAARRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMS!, the way John’s screaming at the end made me feel shaky even after I’d seen it five times… just… EVERYTHING. I understand why it was divisive and I’m not denying it had its flaws but to me it was perfect <3

@темы: john heffernan, kyle soller, claire's top 13 of 2013, AAAAAAAALLLAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRUUUUUUUUUUMMMMSSSSS, also needs to be showered in awards, and i had a bloody lovely time going to see it and sharing it all with friends who loved it too, and i think the more cretin letts hated it the more i loved it, heff needs to be showered in all the awards, i just have a lot of edward ii feelings, i miss it, i need to shut up, it was just a really great bit of 2013, oh god this play, okay i got a bit carried away with this one, this isn't even half of my feelings tbh, theatre

anotherboywholived replied to your post: Top 13 Plays of 2013 =2. The Hothouse …

'Lush being the most fantastic little bitch' god I wish this'd been on the show poster

I should’ve designed the poster. It would’ve been all about Lush and what a deliciously bitchy sasspot peacockish scumbag (but not a murderer) he was xD

Top 13 Plays of 2013

=2. The Pride (Trafalgar Transformed)

The Pride. Wow. The Pride was beautiful, and couldn’t have been more timely. I’m going to keep this one brief because I could say so, SO much if I let myself start, but essentially this is so high up my list because I was pretty much speechless as the lights came up for the interval and by the end I was so moved I could feel tears in my eyes at how much I cared for them all. Perhaps it hit a nerve. When they held those signs up in the photo I wanted to go over and hug them all…I’m not even sure if I was thinking of the characters or the actors - they’d all done such an amazing job that I don’t suppose I saw much difference in that moment anyway. It was touching and funny, awful and shocking, achingly sad and yet hopeful… I was left feeling so, so glad I’d seen it. It felt like a play that really mattered, and I wish I could go again and take a bunch of homophobic people with me in the hope it might change their minds.

Top 13 Plays of 2013

=2. The Hothouse (Trafalgar Transformed)

I was originally going to put this at number 3…but having thought about it a little more, I think I only put it there rather than second place to avoid looking too biased in favour of Heff. And that’s a stupid reason, because I did genuinely really love this play regardless. (I mean, I even went to see it for a repeat viewing on a day I fully expected to see his understudy. See! I’m not just a crazy fangirl! :P) But I didn’t want to move the second place play down. So. Joint second place.

What I have to admit here is that I love being made to feel uncomfortable in the theatre. I love that it has the power to do that, and I think it’s really good to find you’ve been forced to face up to something, or at least think about something you hadn’t considered before, rather than just being entertained all the time. That’s what made me love The Hothouse, because it made me almost cry for laughing so much, and yet there was this awful underlying feeling that there was a lot of dark, nasty stuff going on and laughing made you a bit guilty. When poor Lamb was on the floor, screaming and shaking and suffering, I regretted finding it all so funny just moments earlier. But then, it didn’t stop me laughing afterwards, either…

Then of course there’s all the quick, witty, clever dialogue, the impressive long speeches, Lush being the most fantastic little bitch, the entire cast being utterly flawless… I can’t put into words how excellent it was in every way. And obviously I have to mention John Heff squeezing the biggest piece of cake anyone has ever seen into his mouth all in one go and then coughing it all up all over himself. That bit sticks in my memory xD My only complaint is that I wish Pinter had made it longer!

@темы: john simm, indira varma, john heffernan, harry melling, simon russell beale, claire's top 13 of 2013, IT WAS SOOOO GOOOOOOOOD, still not entirely sure what heff's doing with his face in the top right pic but HAHAHA, SUCH A WONDERFUL PRODUCTION, theatre

4. Josephine & I (Bush Theatre)

I went to see this for two reasons, really. One, CUSH JUMBO. Two, I’d read a little about Josephine Baker for my uni assignment on music in the Weimar Republic, and thought she sounded pretty awesome. I’m so glad I did. I cannot say enough good things about it. Cush didn’t just star in this one-woman show, she wrote it too, and I could feel the love she put into it all dripping out of every line. It was inspiring, moving, funny, and so full of heart. I laughed, I cried, I had shivers down my spine and I was completely spellbound the whole way through. Utterly wonderful.

5. The Trench (Les Enfants Terribles)

I’m just going to reblog an old post of mine about this, because I’ll just repeat myself anyway. Real physical theatre, all in verse, and an aural and visual treat from start to finish. It was eight or nine months ago I saw this (the earliest one in my top five) and I still rave about it. Bloody brilliant.

This will never not be one of the best pieces of theatre I have EVER seen. Incredible acting, stunning visuals, wonderful lighting, amazing puppets, gorgeous music, beautiful sсript. Heartbreaking and uplifting and just fantastic. Not ashamed to say I cried <3

I decided to do my Top 13 Plays of 2013 (I can’t bear to cut it down to ten! It was so hard already!)

In no particular order, 6-13 are…

Othello (National Theatre)

Strange Interlude (National Theatre)

Coriolanus (Donmar Warehouse)

Henry V (Noel Coward)

Sea Wall (National Theatre)

1984 (Headlong, on tour)

The Effect (National Theatre)

No Quarter (Royal Court)

@темы: tom sturridge, billie piper, andrew scott, tom hiddleston, hadley fraser, charles edwards, rory kinnear, adrian lester, anne-marie duff, claire's top 13 of 2013, honestly i'd love to know, if anyone wants to join in that'd be really cool, jonjo o'neill, mark arends, theatre, jude law

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I know it’s a boring thing to say but I think my waterproof, windproof trousers that got me through snow fields in minus temperatures are definitely up there xD Theatre tickets, I suppose, they’re some of my best memories of the year. There’s probably something really obvious and I just can’t think…

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Caro Emerald, early this year. I was a bit slow on the uptake and really feel I should’ve discovered her much earlier than I did! I got to see her live in September for my birthday and she’s just fantastic. Absolutely love her :)

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year (It only goes up to 36 so I’m going to guess you meant that…do feel free to correct me if you want another one!)

Again this is kind of boring because it’s from the song I already chose in my last post but this reminds me a lot of writing my Masters assignments, which took up a LOT of my year…

'I don’t even know what to say about every little thing
Cos I’m tired and I want to go to sleep’

xD
