Edward II, Christopher Marlowe
#y’all know this is my fave#remember how Kobna fluffed this in the last performance#and much as I love him I was FURIOUS#its like giving the audience a chance to say ‘why the fuck are you risking everything for this cocky bastard’#and giving Edward the chance to answer ‘because despite that cockiness he loves me as a person and he’s going to die for me’#yes Edward is weak-willed and irresponsible and petulent and a million other faults#but he’s also madly recklessly in love#oh sweetheart you never should have been born a king#I just read this with Heff’s intonation every time#its such a simple fact for him but he kind of knows its not going to end well#fuck#sorry for the tag rant#edward II#homosexual kings before all other things
NANCY NEVER APOLOGISE FOR A TAG RANT <3
And also also also this reminds me - the other thing about this that makes me really sad is that Edward could’ve said all manner of things he loved about Gaveston, like his wit or his company or even just his nice fluffy beard, y’know, something particular about HIM, but no, he chose ‘because he loves me’. Just that. Like that was enough, because he just wanted to be loved more than anything. I mean, I’m sure he did love his wit and his company and his fluffy beard and his talk of wanton poets and everything but…that he loved him was so important to him. Real life Edward II is far from my specialist subject and really all I know is how I personally understood the play, but… that just made me so sad for him! *cries everywhere*
