So why did you start studying classical music?

I’ve just always loved it, is the boring answer to that. I’ve been playing piano since I was five and clarinet since I was ten, and my piano teacher let me borrow her CD of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and I adored it, so I was hooked. That was the first piece that really grabbed me. It made me look into other composers and styles and I loved listening to it all as well as just playing. I had a complete confidence meltdown when it came to applying for uni and did Maths for a couple of years because I was an IDIOT and convinced myself I wouldn’t manage Music, but after a while of doing that I hated it so much that it knocked the sense back in to me and begged the Music department to give me a place instead. It’s just what I do, really. And it’s really interesting, because we get to study history and politics and all sorts for context, rather than just sitting at the piano mucking about all day. And some of the composers were fascinating characters, too. It’s all I’ve ever really done with my life, and I can’t imagine doing anything else now
